Part of me, when I hear this kind of crap, just wants to roll over and go to sleep forever and ever.
I get so frustrated that I don't even know where to begin, except to say that wishing that all those 'evil' things that exist and won't go away, well, they EXIST AND WON'T GO AWAY, no matter how hard you rail against them and tell people they are filthy and scream about the decline of civilization. And trying to squelch the reality of certain events and people in our history and today...does this country truly desire to make up a history of propaganda to sell our kids?
And as for the Grand Canyon book - I can't get too super annoyed because it's allowing the freedom of speech and presenting two beliefs side by side. But Noah + the Flood = the Grand Canyon? Huh??
Maybe Atlantis lives underneath.
Posted by zippy at November 23, 2004 2:19 PMHooray for revisionism of the most illogical sort! I had known about the geology book, and really didn't find that too objectionable for the reason you stated...but like everything else it's this g-damn slippery slope.
I mean, please. Religion is not science. They are discrete. Can't we accept that? It seems so simple to me. But, then, I'm not like most people. It just seems if we chose to use a little logic, instead of blind faith, we'd get along better in this world.

Posted by: Kelly at November 23, 2004 4:37 PMLord, i couldn't even finish the article because it was too distrubing. Like them I chose to stick my fingers in my ears and hum really loud. Only difference is I'm right and they are wrong - so there!
Posted by: margaret at November 23, 2004 5:41 PMHey, let's look at the really long view - this country's been embroiled in politics for only a few hundred years--since GW's 2nd term--and he went out rather unpopular. Is God in science? Well, see what Stephen Hawking thinks in his Universe and Brief History of Time. Also, check out web sites like livingthefield.com
Posted by: Dad at November 23, 2004 9:13 PMYou know... when you read a book from 3 decades ago stating that certain "things" are not the cause of cancer when they are clearly causes of cancer today, I see a need to rewrite history or at the very least, the book. This logic would also seem to hold true for the Bible.
It also peaks my interest that the puritanical right has started peddling the same revisionist attacks on history which in the past they were so keen to obstruct, Afro-Centric Black History revisions to school books.
Admittedly, some claims were completely out of this world, though strangely enough, in the same vein as the Grand Canyon "A Different View". Historical fact or not, it is metaphor and what children are learning by. Not an ideal learning situation for history if you ask me.
The battle for "hearts and minds" starts early on it seems.
Although in my opinion, Afro-Centrics had and still have much more reason to revise, or rather reclaim their history - since for the most part it had been taken from them and to some extent was non-existent - the Afro-Centrics still took this revisionist history a bit too far.
Now however, I currently fail to see how the "pious right" can lay claim to the same reasoning as a means to revise or reclaim what is already known as historical and well documented fact other than finally admitting that their earlier obstructions to bar the Afro-Centrics from revising and reclaiming their history, was indeed wrong.
So, what's it gonna be?
Walk the fine edge of the sword rewriting history to fill religious theological, fanatical and other far flung philosophies based more in faith than fact? Because if we do then we have no reason to be attacking an Islamic Fundamentalist world view. Or do we reach down in ourselves, into what we know based on historical and scientific fact, that we "exist" and call - bullshit!
I call bullshit! Stephan Hawking doesn't lie and neither does science. Unless it is Dubya science, in which case "fact" is a dirty word and quite open to interpretation.
As for religion and science, I say as long as both are clearly looked upon as a search for truth, then they are clearly one and the same achieved by alternate means.
Otherwise, I can bullshit!
Posted by: Baku at November 24, 2004 10:21 AMI remember when I was in primary school, and we were studying about the greek gods. My mother made fun of the greeks for believing that there were many gods and that their gods lived on top of Mount Olympus... and absolutely ridiculed the greeks because there were believers who stuck to their views even after men were able to climb to the top of Mount Olympus, and found no evidence of Gods. And then I think about my poor mother. Science has once again advanced to a point where we can definitively prove that certain facts in the bible are not necesarily true... While I do not think that the bible made any specific claims about the creation of the Grand Canyon - it did make claims that durring that flood, all people except for Noah's family were wiped off the earth. The genetic variations within the currently living human race prove that we did not all decend from Noah's lineage. The flood did not go down the way the bible claims, and there is proof of that fact. In her inability to accept those scientific facts that seem to counter aspects of the bible, my mother has joined the ranks of those greeks that she ridiculed - and I am stuck with an image of my mom in a mob of greeks claiming that her gods were not found on teh mountain becuase they are good hiders.
