I'm so very embarrased to be a part of this country right now. And there sits Bush, grinning from ear to ear, as if over 55 million people didn't vote against him returning to power yesterday.
"And if I laugh at any mortal thing, 'tis that I may not weep."
--George Gordon, Lord Byron
Posted by zippy at November 3, 2004 12:31 PMWouldn't Kerry do the same thing too if he was elected? Wouldn't we all be grinning like the devil if we won the presidency?
Look at it this way.....in this great country of ours.....by law Bush can't run again after this. You can look forward to Hilary Clinton running in the next election.
Posted by: Crispy at November 3, 2004 1:21 PMYeah, we'd be grinning - but we wouldn't look like an evil monkey. That's the difference.
Also, there might be an intent to heal the huge divide going on right now - but I seriously doubt there will be any steps towards that. It's the 'My way or the highway' Presidency.
I just wanted Bush out - everyone thinks Hilary's a bitch anyway.
Posted by: Suzie at November 3, 2004 2:06 PM"evil monkey" is a very apt description. i haven't turned on the tv yet today, but just one picture of him and that awful smirk on the post webpage was enough for me :( i hope that, if anything, getting lambasted during the debates and realizing not everyone agrees with his black/white mentality will prompt some changes in him for the next term, but i wouldn't count on it.
Posted by: Sracey at November 3, 2004 6:18 PMI blame the bloggers for not blogging more blogfully.
Posted by: nithan at November 3, 2004 6:48 PMergh. I bottomed out today. This is going to be a hell of a healing process. Viva la revolucion!
Posted by: kelly at November 3, 2004 8:54 PMPlease, we'd all be an "evil monkey" too if we were getting a blowjob in the oval office.....whooops....that was Clinton! Nevermind!
Posted by: Crispy at November 3, 2004 9:43 PMChomsky comes to mind:
"American society is now remarkably atomized. Political organizations have collapsed. In fact, it seems like even bowling leagues are collapsing. The left has a lot to answer for here. There's been a drift toward very fragmenting tendencies among left groups, toward this sort of identity politics."
and...
"Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media."
and...
"I have often thought that if a rational Fascist dictatorship were to exist, then it would choose the American system."
~ Chomsky
however...
"The natural liberty of man is to be free from any superior power on Earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of man, but only to have the law of nature for his rule."
"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds."
~ Samuel Adams
... leaves me feeling free... well, relatively.
Posted by: Baku at November 4, 2004 9:18 AMMan, I have been soooo irritable. The littlest things have been totally setting me off. No printer paper by the copier, no desk space, can't find someone to help me at the Home Depot... And just now I realized why.
I have PES. Post-Election Syndrome.
And like PMS it is only exacerbated by caffeine.
So, you and me and all these amoral democrats can sit around and have PES while our party tries to figure out why we can't get it done.
Actually, I will tell you why we can't get it done. Who were our last several presidents? They were Good Old Boys from the south who were governors. The exact opposite from Kerry. What is wrong with America? What makes our Jesus-fearing good old boys from the south any better than people from the rest of the country. Northerners just can't get elected. And after hearing Chuck Schummer speak i am totally beside myself that my centrist party is actually thinking about how to lean more to the right to appeal to these pain in the ass bible thumpers who cant get passed a few campaign buzz words (gay marriage, antiabortion). For the love of God, how is it that there is a war going on and no one seems to notice? How is that we have an amazing deficit and no one cares about reigning in Bush? Why werent these the issues?
We have to remind this president that 51% does not a mandate make and he has some accountability to speak to. We absolutely cannot let the turn of events prevent us from taking control of policy. For the next few years, don't go to stupid rallies on the Mall. Write to your local officials, call your Congressmen, email the President, and dont let them forget that 49% of Americans have something to say.

Yes!!!
BTW... do you think then that the result would have been different with Edwards as President and Kerry as his Vice Pres running mate?
Posted by: Baku at November 5, 2004 8:57 AMInteresting...I am not sure how things would have turned out if Edwards led the charge...perhaps they wouldnt have been able to pick them apart so much because he seems fairly squeaky clean and this morals BS wouldnt have been such a deciding factor. besides the fact that he is lawyer...which they would have pushed that angle...but then so is most of Congress.
I have been thinking about all this alot and I think that it is time for a revolution similar to the way the 60s played out as the social revolution. We need that kind of fire to burn in people like us and we need to base it around education and information. Skewed media has had a dramatic impact on what people think is news. as a trained journalist it nauseates me to see what is acceptable as news these days. Journalists can't be bothered to interview, research, dig, fact check. They just want to be pundits and be media superstars. And they are the Fourth Estate. And with that comes responsibility, which they are sacrificing for shortcuts and paychecks. We need media reform.
Second...As I become less naive and more aware of how people get their information in the south and probably so in the Midwest- we need to find out exactly what goes on and what is being said in those WalMarts of churches, literally religious complexes spring up that people flock to because there is nothing else to do in those towns and they eat up all the misinformation being thrown at them by their ministers. Our relovution needs to target these people and teach them what a fact is. And the fact is that Bush has a vision that is ultimately going to embroil us in war in the Middle East and change the way we live forever (oil repurcussions, increased terrorism, loss of respect from the global community).
We have an amazing opportunity right now in Palestine. The people there are ready to work towards peace and smooth out relations. With Arafat's death we can find a way to work things out peacefully and helping that region find a way to live without the PLO. But I know Bush will miss that opportunity. Because he doesnt understand that different people live different lives and dont need democracy and Western ideals to do it.
Bush said he can't wait to jump into his second term to work with the people who believe in his goals. That doesnt sound like compromise to me. It sounds like someone who believes he has a divine mandate to run rampant with power.
Posted by: Andrea at November 5, 2004 10:42 AMI disagree with your evaluation of the what the possible demise of Arafat would bring.
I would find just the opposite, with hardliners and other factions fighting for control of Palestine. The fabric is unraveling and a Bush policy of unquestionable support for Israel will certainly add to the extremist view of fundamentalists in this country and those of the Middle East.
It is a slippery slope and we are all wearing ski's.
Though still, I can not push myself to flee to Canada.
Posted by: Baku at November 5, 2004 1:01 PMOn a lighter note, if the sky clears up tonight (monday) "they" are saying people as south as south carolina might be able to see the aurora borealis.
things like that kinda put politics into perspective, don't they? Earth is great.
